European Dragon Tattoos

by Ripple on May.23, 2009, under Animal tattoo, Arm & hand tattoo, Back & neck tattoo, Tattoo & Body Art, Tattoo images

european-dragon-tattooDragons are an important part of the world of mythology, folklore and fairy tales in Europe. European dragons are quite different from Asian dragons, though they are recognizably the same creature.

The fairy tale dragon may be on its own or the dragon tattoo may be accompanied by other associated images – think knights or fairies for example. The lines are likely to be finer, with intricate detailing. These dragon tattoos make a beautiful and striking visual image.

The appearance of European dragons:

  • Wings growing on its back (that look like the wings of a bat). Most oriental dragons don’t have wings.

  • Usually has a long tail.

  • 2 or 4 legs.

  • Lives in a cave or underground lair. The European dragon is linked to the element earth.

  • Most European dragons are malevolent.

Germany, in particular, has a long history of featuring dragons as representative of greed (the dragons will often be seen guarding treasures). The word for dragon in German mythology is worm, specifically relating to a serpent or a snake. Even though the dragon is often depicted as a winged creature, in German mythology it’s often depicted as living underground or in a dark lair.

Dragons also take their place in Celtic mythology. The red dragon in particular is associated with the Britons (the Welsh) and the white dragon with the Saxons. The red dragon is one of the few European benevolent dragons.

In ancient Roman times, the dragon was a mix of Greek dragons and Asian dragons, creating an interesting blend of Western and Eastern influences.

Chinese Dragon Tattoos

Traditional Chinese Symbol for Dragon

Simplified Chinese Symbol for Dragon

The dragon has long represented mystery and power in China. Although dragons often have been represented in a negative way, Asian dragon tattoos and particularly Chinese dragon tattoos represent:

  • Intelligence

  • Good luck

  • Strength

  • Health

  • Harmony

  • Benevolence

Dragons have a Yang (male) nature and are associated with the number 9, a lucky number in China because it is the biggest possible single number.

Chinese dragon tattoos can be chosen for their meaning:

  • A horned dragon tattoo: the wearer chooses to be mighty in their actions or words.

  • The earth dragon: rules the earth and sends a message of connection to the earth or land.

  • The yellow dragon: a hornless dragon known for scholarly knowledge.

  • The celestial dragon: protects the Gods. Many people with strong spiritual beliefs choose the celestial dragon to share those beliefs and confirm their own spiritual path. It’s one of the most popular tattoo dragons.

Some more characteristics of Chinese dragons:

  • Its body is covered in scales (117 to be precise)

  • Snake-like appearance

  • 4 legs with 5 claws on each leg. Earlier versions first had 3 and later 4 claws or toes.

  • Is associated with water, they can control the weather and bring rain.

  • Often has a flaming pearl under its chin.

  • Most of them don’t have wings (although they can fly).

  • Chinese dragons (and dragons in general) have supernatural powers.

  • They can shape-shift, for instance in a human or a silkworm or the entire universe.

  • The dragon is also one of the signs of the Chinese zodiac

  • The rival of the Chinese dragon is the tiger

Most Chinese dragon tattoos and other Asian dragon tattoos are done in color. Often the dragon tattoo image ‘winds’ itself up a person’s arm or leg, dragons being long and snake-like.

Tattoo Designs: Difference between Past and Today

by Ripple on Apr.30, 2009, under Gliter Tattoo / Temporary Tattoo, Tattoo & Body Art, Tattoo Ink, Tattoo Knowledge, Tattoo Machine & Guns, Tattoo Power supply, Tattoo Supplies, Tattoo accessories, Tattoo kits, Tattoo needle, Tattoo news

More and more tattoo designs appears in the market.  They are every kinds even what kinds of you never thinking about. Choosing tattoo designs is more fun and more complicated than ever. In short, we have more tattoo designs to choose from than any other culture in history for several reasons.  This is probably the first time in human history that tattooing has been an option that’s open to virtually everyone ( everyone is whom is eighteen or older ).

Tattoo Designs Past

In traditional societies tattooing may have been very common, but it was ceremonial rather than purely decorative. You had to earn your tattoos, for the most part, and you were restricted in terms of choice of tattoo designs.

Then, in western society, tattooing briefly became popular among the upper classes in the seventeenth century. Both men and women got tattoos, but it was an expensive process few could afford. And when the invention of the tattoo gun made it affordable it became less socially acceptable. For a time only sailors and those who had a criminal or gang-related had tattoos. Up until a few decades ago, in fact, only men had them and though there were some great tattoo designs, they were rather limited in range.

Tattoo Designs Today

the-difference

Fast forward to today: men and women, young and old alike are drawn to tattoos. There is little if any social stigma left. Even people you might never expect to have tattoos – like middle aged or older women – have them and love them. And in terms of tattoo designs, again, there are no limits. We draw on world history, cross cultural designs, and modern art. A Maori symbol might make a cool tattoo design, but so might something from the Celtic or Native American culture. With all that choice, how do you go about choosing tattoo designs?

Start with everyone’s favorite information source – the internet. Look for free tattoo designs online and you’ll find a wealth of images. It may take some searching, but eventually you will come up with so many designs that the problem becomes narrowing it down to those you find attractive and are able to use. Here are some things to keep in mind: often, simple tattoo designs are the best because they allow for the boldest lines. Colors are great, but they do tend to fade a bit faster than black, so that’s another thing to keep in mind. If you haven’t gotten a tattoo before and you don’t have an image in mind, look for small tattoo designs. Some of them can be added to later on, but a smaller image is a great place to start.

Finally, enjoy yourself. The fact that there are so many tattoo designs available to day is reminiscent of a lot other things in our culture. For example, if you live in a larger town or city, chances are that you have food from many different world cuisines easily available to you. All the options can make choosing harder, but the payoff is great. The main thing about choosing tattoo designs is to choose one that appeals to you, personally – you’re the one who’s going to be living with it!
