Eye Tattooing Risk—Don’t Turn A Blind Eye

IF you think the common tattoos are so over, you’ve got another think coming, eye tattooing maybe can attract you.
To tattoo the eyes, the doctors used two different procedures. First they used a traditional needle with ink on it, but when the ink didn’t hold, they switched to a syringe that injected ink into the eye. The most recent posts indicate that all was well, with one of the guys saying it felt like he had something in his eye.
But that’s not to say it’s a good idea.
“Cosmetic tattooing of the cornea can be extremely dangerous,” advises Dr. Sandra Belmont, a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical Center-New York Presbyterian Hospital. “Infection, perforation and hemorrhage are among the potential complications.”
However, there are good reasons for getting an eye tattoo. If a person has suffered eye trauma - burning, laceration or bruising - scars can result, which a tattoo can cover. It can also help people with leucoma - an opaque blemish, usually white in color -and return the eye’s appearance to one of more normalcy.
How to Get an Eye Tattoo

Consult your doctor. Some will do corneal tattoos if their patient has suffered from some sort of eye trauma. However, most doctors will refuse to give a healthy person an eye tattoo. There are too many risks involved in the procedure. Tattooing can cause blindness, infection, scarring and hemorraging. While there has been some research into eye tattoos, the results and implications are not yet known.
Talk to a tattoo artist. Some are starting to do blue eye tattoos. One technique involves injecting your eye with a traditional needle with ink on it. However, this is extremely risky.
Be prepared for the technique. The artist will inject ink into your eye with a syringe. It turns the entire white part of you eye blue. It is extremely difficult to get the ink injected into the right layer of the eye. Do not attempt to give yourself an eye tattoo. You could go blind.
Use lidocaine drops to numb your eyelids before the procedure. The surface of your eye doesn’t have any nerve endings, so there isn’t much pain.
Apply a patch and use antibiotic drops after you get an eye tattoo.
If you suffered some sort of eye trauma, including a laceration, burning or bruising, an eye tattoo can cover the scars. People with leucoma have white blemishes on their eyes. Tattoos can make their eyes look normal.
Eye Tattooing Part III: Eyeball Tattoos

The variation of eye tattooing comes as a great shock to most people. It seems unlikely that the eyeball is an area that can actually receive any form of pigmentation without suffering major damage.
During the tattooing procedure, the pigment is placed under a thin film on the cornea of the eye; specifically, it is injected between the sclera and the conjunctiva. The pigment then bleeds through the space creating the so-called eye tattoo. Warnings against this variation of eye tattooing include risk of eye-tissue penetration which can potentially damage the tissue and retina impairing overall eye functionality.
Eye tattooing of this nature is generally considered dangerous and unadvisable; however, some people choose to undergo the procedure as an expression of boldness, body ownership and originality.
