Digital Calipers and Mechanical Dial Calipers—Which One You Will Choose?

by Sophia on Nov.26, 2009, under Electronics, Other Subject

Mechanical dial calipers and electronic digital calipers can have similar high precision and accuracy. Depending on the model, both types can reach 0.01mm or 0.0005 inch resolution, with 0.02mm or 0.001 inch accuracy. The difference between the two types is more a matter of robustness versus ease of use.

Digital calipers have the same mechanical requirements as dial calipers:

·                       Measuring edges should be straight and meet precisely without any visible gaps.

·                       The rail should be straight and the jaws should slide smoothly without being loose.

·                       A thumb roller fine adjustment allows precise closing of the jaws.

·                       A locking screw stops the jaws from moving.

Measuring edges and bars to support the following measurements are standard:

·                       Internal dimension.

·                       External dimension.

·                       Depth.

·                       Step height.

The basic accuracy of digital and mechanical calipers is about the same. Digital calipers are easy to read and can easily convert between measurement systems. They are a good choice for engineers, mechanics and technicians who are careful with their tools and don’t mind changing batteries every few months.

Electronic Digital Caliper Maintenance Tips

by Sophia on Nov.25, 2009, under Electronics, Other Subject

Electronic digital calipers seldom have problems. The few problems which customers may encounter usually result from wearing out of batteries, or from poor battery contact or from the breakdowns as follows:

1) Fixed digits —- resulting from accidental trouble in circuit, accompanied by display of some irrelevant signs or symbols.

Solution: Take out the battery and put it back after waiting at least 30 econds. It should become normal after several trials.

2) Flashing digits —- resulting from low electric voltage.

To get it solved, you need to replace the battery as soon as possible.

3) Figures displayed in disorderly manner —– resulting from its unstable display. It results from the wet protective sticker.

To get it solved, please refer to the above-mentioned operating instructions.

4) No display —- resulting from no electric voltage.

Solution: Take out the battery and examine the condition of the battery contacts. If they appear dirty or corroded then clean the battery contacts

until they are visibly clean. Put battery back. Display should visible again.

5) Mechanical abrasion:

The method of repair is about the same as that of a vernier caliper’s. But be careful to avoid any forceful striking, straightening or bending. The striking, straightening or bending should done after the electronic parts been taken apart. Repair can also be done for more times than before not only because ‘Zero’ can be set at any position but also because it’s not limited by zero - error of vernier calipers.

How to Take the Measurement with a Electronic Digital Caliper

by Sophia on Nov.20, 2009, under Electronics, Other Subject

When you take the measurement, do not touch the measuring surface, you need to keep them clean all the time.

Before measuring the objects, you need to press the ON/OF button to switch on power at the first. Then, press the mm/inch button to select the desired unit system as you like. Finally, press the ZERO buttons to set zero.

Taking the outside measurements

Steps: Put the lower jaws of the digital caliper on the outside parts of the item. Slide it against the item gently until both of the lower jaws tighten against the outside surfaces of the item perfectly. Then read the numbers directly from the large LCD display. The outside measurement is taken easily.

Taking the inside measurements

Steps: As you can see in the picture below, when measure the inside diameter of the object, firstly, you need to insert the upper jaws into the hole. Then open them up to fit the hole entirely. Then, read the number directly.

Taking the step measurements

Steps: Place the head of the digital caliper on the plane straightly and make sure that the step measuring face is perpendicular to the plane. Make the step measuring face of the upper movable jaw touch the top surface of the object completely, and then the measurement is done. Read the number on the Lcd display directly.

Taking the depth measurements

Steps: Move the slider of the digital caliper and adjust the depth bar perpendicular to both the hard, flat plane and the internal side of the item. After that, move the slider until the bottom of the fixed scale touch the top surface of the item tightly. Then read the number on the LCD display directly.

Electronic Digital Caliper

by Sophia on Nov.19, 2009, under Electronics, Other Subject

Digital Calipers also called Electronic Digital Calipers, offer easy reading, gearless precision, with both English and Metric Measurements. Digital Calipers should be frequently checked for accuracy. It is a device used to measure the distance between two symmetrically opposing sides. A caliper can be as simple as a compass with inward or outward-facing points. The tips of the caliper are adjusted to fit across the points to be measured, the caliper is then removed and the distance read by measuring between the tips with a measuring tool, such as a ruler.

They are used in many fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, gunsmithing, handloading, woodworking, woodturning and in medicine.
