The Symbols of Dragon Tattoos
by Alice on Jun.13, 2009, under Animal tattoo, Back & neck tattoo, Tattoo & Body Art, Tattoo Machine & Guns, Tattoo Supplies, Tattoo by body parts, Tattoo images, Tattoo kits, Tattoo needle
There is no wonder that dragon tattoos are some of the most popular tattoo styles in the world today. Different cultures have used dragon symbols at some time throughout their history and many people have chosen to get one of these cultural designs tattooed on their body to represent something that is meaningful to them. There are a number of different reasons that may entice a person obtaining a tattoo featuring a dragon image and with a little bit of creativity, the dragon in the tattoo can be just as unique as the person that it adorns.
Cultures all over the world have dragon myths and lore somewhere in their history. European cultures had knights that went out to slay the fire breathing dragons which horded gold and ate maidens while oriental cultures had the wise dragons that could tell you the things that you needed to know to live a great life. Even some Middle Eastern cultures had dragons included in their tales, believed to be based on the huge lizards that inhabited the lands where they lived. Most of the origins of the dragon stories of the past remain unknown, but the popularity of the stories ensured that they were passed down from generation to generation.
The most common images of a dragon resemble some sort of reptilian creature with very lizard-like features dominating the image. Great care is taken with the more expensive tattoos to depict the individual scales that cover the body of the dragon and some of the dragon tattoo images feature the forked tongue that is common to reptilian creatures. In many cultures, the dragons possess the power of flight with strong wings resembling those of bats and can breathe fire to disperse their enemies or defeat them.
Each dragon tattoo means something different to the person that is wearing it and sometimes the general meaning of the tattoo can be discerned by the actual image. Dragons that are meant to symbolize strength will be large with large wings and a defiant expression on its face, possibly breathing fire. Dragons that are meant to symbolize wisdom will often have a small smile or look of reflection on their faces and are typically depicted as wizened to give the appearance of great age.
The dragon can be used as a symbol of good, evil, mischief, wisdom, adventure, or strength. The type of image that is chosen will depend on the personal preference of the person getting the tattoo and what they would like that tattoo to represent in their eyes. A dragon tattoo can be of any color imaginable, with many men choosing tattoo designs that are red or green and many women choosing tattoo designs that are purple, blue, or pink hued. The colors are just as important to the design of the dragon tattoo as the body image and the facial expression and choosing your own combination of these items will give you a dragon tattoo design that is as unique as you are.

European Dragon Tattoos
by Ripple on May.23, 2009, under Animal tattoo, Arm & hand tattoo, Back & neck tattoo, Tattoo & Body Art, Tattoo images
Dragons are an important part of the world of mythology, folklore and fairy tales in Europe. European dragons are quite different from Asian dragons, though they are recognizably the same creature.
The fairy tale dragon may be on its own or the dragon tattoo may be accompanied by other associated images – think knights or fairies for example. The lines are likely to be finer, with intricate detailing. These dragon tattoos make a beautiful and striking visual image.
The appearance of European dragons:
-
Wings growing on its back (that look like the wings of a bat). Most oriental dragons don’t have wings.
-
Usually has a long tail.
-
2 or 4 legs.
-
Lives in a cave or underground lair. The European dragon is linked to the element earth.
-
Most European dragons are malevolent.
Germany, in particular, has a long history of featuring dragons as representative of greed (the dragons will often be seen guarding treasures). The word for dragon in German mythology is worm, specifically relating to a serpent or a snake. Even though the dragon is often depicted as a winged creature, in German mythology it’s often depicted as living underground or in a dark lair.
Dragons also take their place in Celtic mythology. The red dragon in particular is associated with the Britons (the Welsh) and the white dragon with the Saxons. The red dragon is one of the few European benevolent dragons.
In ancient Roman times, the dragon was a mix of Greek dragons and Asian dragons, creating an interesting blend of Western and Eastern influences.

The dragon has long represented mystery and power in China. Although dragons often have been represented in a negative way, Asian dragon tattoos and particularly Chinese dragon tattoos represent:
-
Intelligence
-
Good luck
-
Strength
-
Health
-
Harmony
-
Benevolence
Dragons have a Yang (male) nature and are associated with the number 9, a lucky number in China because it is the biggest possible single number.
Chinese dragon tattoos can be chosen for their meaning:
-
A horned dragon tattoo: the wearer chooses to be mighty in their actions or words.
-
The earth dragon: rules the earth and sends a message of connection to the earth or land.
-
The yellow dragon: a hornless dragon known for scholarly knowledge.
-
The celestial dragon: protects the Gods. Many people with strong spiritual beliefs choose the celestial dragon to share those beliefs and confirm their own spiritual path. It’s one of the most popular tattoo dragons.
Some more characteristics of Chinese dragons:
-
Its body is covered in scales (117 to be precise)
-
Snake-like appearance
-
4 legs with 5 claws on each leg. Earlier versions first had 3 and later 4 claws or toes.
-
Is associated with water, they can control the weather and bring rain.
-
Often has a flaming pearl under its chin.
-
Most of them don’t have wings (although they can fly).
-
Chinese dragons (and dragons in general) have supernatural powers.
-
They can shape-shift, for instance in a human or a silkworm or the entire universe.
-
The dragon is also one of the signs of the Chinese zodiac
-
The rival of the Chinese dragon is the tiger
Most Chinese dragon tattoos and other Asian dragon tattoos are done in color. Often the dragon tattoo image ‘winds’ itself up a person’s arm or leg, dragons being long and snake-like.
