Raven tattoos – The symbol of power, intelligence and mystery

Raven Tattoo Designs - For many of the indigenous people of the Americas, the raven is a powerful animal totem, a protector and spirit guide. He’s a shape- shifter and messenger and a symbol of transformation. Its coal black plumage invokes the void, secrecy, and mystery. But the raven is also a solar symbol. The mythical raven brought the Sun to mankind, and in so doing became a symbol of light.
From the earliest times, raven myths tell of its intelligence and concern for humans. The raven’s intelligence has made it one of the most admired birds wherever it lives. The ancient Norse god, Odin, is described as having two ravens for eyes and ears — the one a symbol of thought, the other of memory. For the Irish, the raven was associated with warfare. In the mythology surrounding King Arthur, one of his knights had an army of ravens.
As a powerful spirit guide, the raven is the keeper of secrets. It is associated with the shadowy world of spells and magic. In Europe, the raven was a favorite symbol for doom and death. An old English tradition says that if the ravens fly away from the Tower of London, the nation will fall. However, raven was suggested to be a mediator between life and death.
For fans of the horror writer, Edgar Allan Poe, raven tattoos are popular. Black feathers and the fathomless look of the raven symbolize mystery, the occult and dark secrets. But far from being miserly, the raven will share its knowledge with those who respect the wisdom of the ancient world. Healing, wisdom, gratitude and affection are all associated with the well-loved raven.
The Haida, an indigenous nation on Canada’s west coast, attribute the creation of humans to a raven intervention. According to legend, raven spotted some creatures trapped in a clam. Quickly bored with this all-male club, he coaxed the timid beings from their shells and introduced them to another set of creatures - females - similarly ensconced in another marine mollusk. By setting the stage for the male and female of the species to come together, the raven acquired his reputation as a trickster. His song is believed to vibrate with temptation, especially the sexual kind.
The raven has an uncanny ability to mimic the sounds of other animals and humans, and its unique pitch is believed to shift consciousness to another level. A symbol of change and of knowledge, this animal spirit guide is often associated with teachers and those with a love of knowledge.

The Symbols of Dragon Tattoos

There is no wonder that dragon tattoos are some of the most popular tattoo styles in the world today. Different cultures have used dragon symbols at some time throughout their history and many people have chosen to get one of these cultural designs tattooed on their body to represent something that is meaningful to them. There are a number of different reasons that may entice a person obtaining a tattoo featuring a dragon image and with a little bit of creativity, the dragon in the tattoo can be just as unique as the person that it adorns.
Cultures all over the world have dragon myths and lore somewhere in their history. European cultures had knights that went out to slay the fire breathing dragons which horded gold and ate maidens while oriental cultures had the wise dragons that could tell you the things that you needed to know to live a great life. Even some Middle Eastern cultures had dragons included in their tales, believed to be based on the huge lizards that inhabited the lands where they lived. Most of the origins of the dragon stories of the past remain unknown, but the popularity of the stories ensured that they were passed down from generation to generation.
The most common images of a dragon resemble some sort of reptilian creature with very lizard-like features dominating the image. Great care is taken with the more expensive tattoos to depict the individual scales that cover the body of the dragon and some of the dragon tattoo images feature the forked tongue that is common to reptilian creatures. In many cultures, the dragons possess the power of flight with strong wings resembling those of bats and can breathe fire to disperse their enemies or defeat them.
Each dragon tattoo means something different to the person that is wearing it and sometimes the general meaning of the tattoo can be discerned by the actual image. Dragons that are meant to symbolize strength will be large with large wings and a defiant expression on its face, possibly breathing fire. Dragons that are meant to symbolize wisdom will often have a small smile or look of reflection on their faces and are typically depicted as wizened to give the appearance of great age.
The dragon can be used as a symbol of good, evil, mischief, wisdom, adventure, or strength. The type of image that is chosen will depend on the personal preference of the person getting the tattoo and what they would like that tattoo to represent in their eyes. A dragon tattoo can be of any color imaginable, with many men choosing tattoo designs that are red or green and many women choosing tattoo designs that are purple, blue, or pink hued. The colors are just as important to the design of the dragon tattoo as the body image and the facial expression and choosing your own combination of these items will give you a dragon tattoo design that is as unique as you are.
